  {"id":4989,"date":"2014-08-29T07:57:33","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T23:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/curtin-hong-kong-alumni-sailing-event\/"},"modified":"2024-09-13T10:52:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-13T02:52:11","slug":"curtin-hong-kong-alumni-sailing-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/curtin-hong-kong-alumni-sailing-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni event highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>International \u2013 Hong Kong sailing trip<\/h2>\n<p>Feature<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday 13 April \u2013 Hong Kong<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Curtin Alumni Hong Kong Chapter was recently invited to join the crew of the prestigious competitive sailing yacht, the Ragamuffin 90, for an evening sail around Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>The grand prix race yacht had recently undergone a full refit and was delivered from its Philippines base to Hong Kong in preparation for the Rolex China Sea Race 2014, which it went on to win.<\/p>\n<p>A few sailing celebrities attended the event including world-class Sailing Master David Witt, Campbell Knox, Craig Malouf, Justin Shave, Geoff Hill, Ferdinand Galleta and Liam Woulfe.<\/p>\n<p>The sail started from Hong Kong\u2019s Middle Island Yacht Club and circled around the southern coast of Hong Kong Island. During the cruise, Master Witt gave a lively reenactment of how his crew managed to escape a waterspout and severe weather during the 1998 Sydney to Hobart race.<\/p>\n<p>The Curtin alumni on board had a fantastic day speaking with the crew and catching up with fellow Curtin graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck to the Ragamuffin 90 crew for their future ocean adventures!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Alumni Lecture &#8211; Stelarc: Zombies, Cyborgs &amp; Chimeras:\u00a0 Alternate anatomical architectures<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Tuesday 3 June &#8211; Perth WA, Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alumni were invited to attend the second instalment in the Alumni Lecture Series 2014, <i>Zombies, Cyborgs &amp; Chimeras: Alternate anatomical architectures<\/i> presented by Stelarc, Distinguished Research Fellow and Director of the Alternate Anatomies Lab, School of Design and Art (SODA), Âé¶¹Ö±²¥.<\/p>\n<p>During the lecture, Stelarc discussed the post-human condition with images, animations and a video of state-of-the-art research in robotics, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and his own projects and performances. If you were unable to attend you can watch the presentation and the Q&amp;A on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLOtDjpu6kUPSmSToc3r5fRXfQtHaAYI2t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curtin Alumni YouTube playlist.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What alumni thought of this lecture:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI am using these lectures as an introduction to university for my gifted and talented son. I am trying to find &#8220;the spark&#8221; that might engage him more and Stelarc&#8217;s lecture was an excellent melding of art and science. Usually, the artistic aspect is less appealing to me but this lecture enhanced my understanding of the collaborations which Stelarc is establishing. Thanks, I had a great evening.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cStelarc&#8217;s hour was much too short, he was phenomenal.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Godfather of Malaysian Comedy<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Wednesday 18 June in Singapore and Thursday 14 August in Perth WA, Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26919\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/PR_16_251.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26919\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/PR_16_251.jpg\" alt=\"Harith Iskander\" width=\"200\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harith Iskander<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ had the pleasure of offering exclusive comedy nights in Singapore and Perth this year. Popular Malaysian comedian, Harith Iskander, presented \u2018<i>Godfather of Malaysian Comedy\u2019<\/i> at the Causeway Exchange Festival in Singapore and at an exclusive benefit show at Bentley Campus in Perth that generated almost $4500. All proceeds will support the Student Scholarships Fund at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥. Thank you to all alumni who made this generous contribution to the life of students. In this fusion of creative worlds where art and design is created, exhibited and experienced, alumni were invited to experience Curtin alumna and artist, Teelah George\u2019s latest exhibition &#8220;<i>Use to stop doors from rattling in frames<\/i>&#8220;. Although Teelah was unable to join us on the night due to personal reasons, the exhibition created a great opportunity for alumni to meet, network and share inspirational conversations.<\/p>\n<p>What alumni thought about the exhibition:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI really enjoyed the interesting choice of medium\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI liked the ideas of weight and weightlessness and measures &#8211; how she measured pieces for her work\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Book presentation of &#8216;Lost &amp; Found&#8217; with author Dr Brooke Davis<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sunday 3 August, Perth WA, Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26925\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26925\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/dr-brooke-davis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26925 \" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/dr-brooke-davis.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Brooke Davis\" width=\"236\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Brooke Davis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As part of Curtin\u2019s Open Day, the Office of Advancement invited alumni to an exclusive book presentation and discussion of the book, <i>Lost &amp; Found,<\/i> with Curtin graduate and author Dr Brooke Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke&#8217;s debut novel, <i>Lost &amp; Found<\/i>, is a story that will make you laugh, cry and feel a little wiser. It has been well received internationally with rights sold in more than 21 countries to date, and became the \u201cbuzz book\u201d of the 2014 London Book Fair. In her presentation, she shared with the audience, the process of writing this novel, from inspirations to the importance of completing her PhD at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥.<\/p>\n<p>See the photos of the event on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.755977264464738.1073741834.115362931859511&amp;type=1&amp;l=c310df8e9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and leave your message to Brooke.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Alumni Lecture \u2013 Dr John Morgan: Radio Telescope Discoveries<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Wednesday 27 August &#8211; Perth WA, Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the third instalment of the Alumni Lecture Series 2014, <i>Radio Telescope Discoveries <\/i>presented by Dr John Morgan, Super Science Fellow, Solar Science in the Department of Imaging and Applied Physics, Science and Engineering, Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ alumni and guests were taken on a journey to discover how radio telescopes are helping us to discover previously unexplored parts of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>During the lecture, Dr Morgan discussed the development, construction and proposed scientific outcomes of the Murchison Widefield Array Telescope and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Telescope.
