  {"id":5678,"date":"2016-06-13T01:05:02","date_gmt":"2016-06-12T17:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/watch-space-entrepreneurial-duo-address-perths-vacant-retail-spaces\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:07:38","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:07:38","slug":"watch-space-entrepreneurial-duo-address-perths-vacant-retail-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/watch-space-entrepreneurial-duo-address-perths-vacant-retail-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Young alumni stories: Entrepreneurial duo address Perth\u2019s vacant retail spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Popupshopup may sound like a tongue twister, but its name belies a very simple yet innovative business launched by Curtin architecture graduate, Daniel Rainone and UWA commerce graduate, Ronan Bray.<\/p>\n<p>The life-long Kensington friends realised that if people can \u2018try before they buy\u2019 in today\u2019s market \u2013 anything from clothing to cars, beds to beauty products \u2013 why not a business?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.popupshopup.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Popupshopup<\/a> is an online platform that addresses Perth\u2019s vacant space problem by matching up short-term rental spaces to businesses, allowing owners or entrepreneurs to test their success in the long term, or simply stand out in a competitive market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s designed to break down all the barriers associated with traditional retail and commercial leasing, and seeks to address the $5.4 billion in annual foregone rent in Australia alone,\u201d says Rainone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt allows you to identify possible downfalls of your original ideas and business models, some of which are almost completely hidden\u2028until real-time scenarios are applied,\u201d says James Quinn from Sunglass Society, a Popupshopup user.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35869 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/pop15-659x420.jpg\" alt=\"pop15\" width=\"659\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Popupshopup launched less than two months ago, but Rainone and Bray received interest for leasing a space just three days after their website went live.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been an overwhelming response from real estate agents, interested tenants, the City of Perth and the public,\u201d says Bray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me this proves that there is a tremendous opportunity for pop up spaces nationally and I\u2019m excited to think what will start to fill these vacant spaces in the coming months,\u201d says Rainone.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being budding CEOs, Rainone and Bray both hold down full-time jobs in architecture and construction, and in marketing management respectively. Rainone says Popupshopup was developed over many late nights and endless weekends, but he didn\u2019t think twice about starting up a business alongside his friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has always been a passion of mine to develop concepts, research ideas and activate those ideas and concepts that excite me,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Rainone\u2019s degree in architecture taught him a range of skills that he says has been continually beneficial in the development of Popupshopup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most important skills was the ability to collaborate and work with a number of different parties through the various stages of the business\u2019s development. In addition, the degree taught me the importance of remaining creative, while at the same time ensuring concepts could be developed into reality without losing the original intention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the pair are still \u201cironing out the teething issues\u201d that come with any new venture, they plan to take Popupshopup nationally in the near future, and are also working to launch a new facet of the business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatch this space!\u201d they declare.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>This story is part of Curtin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.curtin.edu.au\/tag\/young-alumni\/\">Young Alumni Stories<\/a> series where we celebrate the achievements of Curtin graduates 35 and under.
