It was a chance encounter at the British Consulate that sparked Madisen Scott\u2019s interest in law.<\/p>\n
Until that moment, the recent high school graduate had been struggling to decide on the right career path.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike many high school students, I was changing my mind every day!\u201d Scott laughs.<\/p>\n
It was an introduction to a local university lecturer, an expert in humanitarian law, that would determine Scott\u2019s future career.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was inspired by her passion and knew I would love to have a career where I felt the same way,\u201d Scott says. \u201cAnd the rest is history!\u201d<\/p>\n
Scott enrolled in a double degree at Curtin, specialising in law and international relations.<\/p>\n
Working at the brand-new John Curtin Law Clinic was a highlight for the budding lawyer.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny time I get asked about my time at Curtin, I chew people\u2019s ears off, bragging about how great working at the clinic was!\u201d Scott says.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe clinic staff were supportive and provided such great expertise and assistance. I was able to develop confidence and faith in my abilities with their support.\u201cIt was the best decision I made in my law degree.\u201d<\/p>\n
The John Curtin Law Clinic, established earlier this year, provides free advice and assistance to eligible small businesses based in Western Australia.<\/p>\n
Curtin law students can enrol in a clinic-based unit and hone their legal skills on real-life cases.<\/p>\n
Scott says law clinic manager and Principal Lawyer Rosaline Tan has since become a role model.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is passionate, knowledgeable and sincere,\u201d Scott says with enthusiasm. \u201cNot only has she had an amazing career in the legal field but she is a kind and approachable mentor.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scott\u2019s passion and hard work have led to an exciting graduate position as Associate to Judge Antoni Lucev in the Federal Circuit Court.<\/p>\n
And she credits her double degree with helping her excel in this challenging new role.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe legal skills and knowledge I acquired at Curtin are critical to my role,\u201d Scott explains. \u201cA large percentage of matters I\u2019m involved with are migration matters, for which my international relations degree has also been invaluable.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to my studies I\u2019m really familiar with the relevant human rights and United Nations frameworks for refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scott says she is constantly on the go.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy role varies day-to-day from opening the Court to\u00a0liaising\u00a0with Counsel and legal representatives to helping assist self-represented litigants,\u201d Scott explains.<\/p>\n
\u201cI also assist His Honour with research on current matters,\u00a0prepare for upcoming cases and communicate with the Registry and litigants as required.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile I\u2019m busy, I thoroughly enjoy the work and that is so satisfying,\u201d Scott smiles. \u201cI learn something new every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scott has big plans for the future.<\/p>\n
