  {"id":6492,"date":"2018-02-13T05:31:15","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T21:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/sisters-study-together-succeed-together\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:08:20","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:08:20","slug":"sisters-study-together-succeed-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/sisters-study-together-succeed-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Sisters who study together, succeed together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Growing up playing netball, basketball and tennis, sometimes all on the same day, it\u2019s little wonder Port Hedland triplets Roberta, Lauren and Jacinta decided to become physiotherapists.<\/p>\n<p>The Ramirez-Smith sisters joined ten of their peers last night as the first cohort to graduate from the <a href=\"http:\/\/courses.curtin.edu.au\/course_overview\/undergraduate\/indigenous-premed-enabling\">Indigenous Pre-Medicine and Health Sciences Enabling Course<\/a> at Curtin. They are now set to begin their first year of an undergraduate degree in <a href=\"http:\/\/courses.curtin.edu.au\/course_overview\/undergraduate\/physiotherapy\">physiotherapy<\/a> when classes start in late February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was always a passion of ours to become physiotherapists, mainly because up north in Port Hedland I know there\u2019s no permanent physio, they\u2019re always fly-in fly-out, and I know that my family always have problems so we kind of just wanted to give back,\u201d says Roberta.<\/p>\n<p>Roberta and her sisters chose Curtin\u2019s enabling course because it\u2019s specifically designed for Indigenous students who want to seek a career in health sciences, but may not have achieved the ATAR they wanted for instant entry to the University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really enjoyed the course, I thought it was good, especially before jumping straight into an undergraduate degree, I thought it gave a good experience of uni,\u201d Roberta says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did find it challenging, I struggled a bit with some of the units, but they have a great support system at CAS [Centre for Aboriginal Studies] and the tutors were excellent, they helped us a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Lauren admits they have the occasional sisterly argument, she says it has been an advantage to have instant friends and study partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we were studying at home we could quiz and test each other, which was really helpful; we were each other\u2019s study resources,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we go to uni, we\u2019re obviously the first friends we make because we\u2019re sisters, and we don\u2019t have to go anywhere by ourselves,\u201d adds Jacinta.<\/p>\n<p>At just 18 years of age, the Ramirez-Smith sisters already have big plans for when they become qualified physiotherapists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought about starting up our own physiotherapy business together, because we would be some the first Indigenous people to run a privately owned medical centre,\u201d says Roberta.<\/p>\n<p>Roberta also says it\u2019s been great to be a part of the very first group of students to graduate from the enabling course, and they\u2019re proud to \u2018blaze the trail\u2019 for other young Indigenous people who want to pursue a career in health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a part of the first cohort, you set the standards for all the rest and you put it out there that the course is for all Aboriginal people; to let them know that the opportunity is there and don\u2019t be afraid to apply.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ramirez-Smith triplets are one step closer to becoming physiotherapists after graduating from Curtin&#8217;s Indigenous Pre-Medicine and Health Sciences Enabling Course.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4182,"featured_media":6495,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_oasis_is_in_workflow":0,"_oasis_original":0,"_oasis_task_priority":"","_relevanssi_hide_post":"","_relevanssi_hide_content":"","_relevanssi_pin_for_all":"","_relevanssi_pin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_unpin_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_keywords":"","_relevanssi_related_include_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_exclude_ids":"","_relevanssi_related_no_append":"","_relevanssi_related_not_related":"","_relevanssi_related_posts":"","_relevanssi_noindex_reason":"","wds_primary_category":0,"wds_primary_research-areas":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"research-areas":[],"class_list":["post-6492","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-campus-and-global-community"],"acf":{"post_options":{"":null,"additional_content":{"title":"See more at Curtin Open Day!","content":"<p>Find out more about Curtin&#8217;s pathways to medicine at <a href=\"http:\/\/openday.curtin.edu.au\">Curtin Open Day<\/a> on 29 July 2018.
