  {"id":6844,"date":"2018-07-19T07:27:49","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T23:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/bayswater-community-works-architecture-students-inject-life-back-suburb\/"},"modified":"2022-12-07T13:08:43","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T05:08:43","slug":"bayswater-community-works-architecture-students-inject-life-back-suburb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/bayswater-community-works-architecture-students-inject-life-back-suburb\/","title":{"rendered":"Bayswater community works with architecture students to inject life back into suburb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city of Bayswater has been \u201ctreading water\u201d for nearly 25 years, according to Chair of Future Bayswater, Paul Shanahan.<\/p>\n<p>Future Bayswater is an award-winning community group comprised of local residents, business people and town planning professionals who have come together through a united vision to reboot their tired suburb.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, the group partnered with 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/study.curtin.edu.au\/offering\/course-pg-master-of-architecture--mc-arch\/#linkid=hum-news-courses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master of Architecture<\/a> students in a project called the Bayswater Urban Regeneration Hub, to generate research and ideas about how to transform Bayswater into an inviting, sustainable and transit-orientated city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are privileged to have Curtin\u2019s best and brightest architecture students take a fresh look at our town centre and capture the community&#8217;s vision and local opportunities to create a thriving transport-oriented hub,\u201d says Shanahan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a great time to be undertaking a study such as this, with the Forrestfield Airport Link and new Ellenbrook line on their way. Bayswater is set to be a significant Metrohub as part of the State Government\u2019s visionary Metronet initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48343\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48343\" style=\"width: 792px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48343 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Railway.jpg\" alt=\"Group of young people stand on a station platform. \" width=\"792\" height=\"420\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bayswater Station upgrade will aim to attract people into the suburb.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As part of the project, the students held forums with Future Bayswater members and the broader community to discuss proposed changes to the town centre. These changes include upgrading the Bayswater train station originally built in 1896, creating new public spaces and amenities and the construction of mixed-use residential apartments.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While Future Bayswater strongly supports the revitalisation of their suburb, they want to ensure any development is forward-thinking.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for the community to voice their concerns. They are the people who will be living in Bayswater in the long run, so their inclusion in matters is very important,\u201d says Roy Githaiga, an architecture student involved in the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the community\u2019s biggest concern was the idea of medium-density living arrangements overshadowing their homes,\u201d says student Oliver Pearce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think in their mind they were picturing large, run-down apartment buildings, whereas in reality these developments can actually tie in seamlessly with the community and help establish a sense of identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48344\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48344\" style=\"width: 792px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48344 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/FUBA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"792\" height=\"420\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48344\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The project brought the Bayswater community together to discuss ideas in informal settings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Working closely with the Future Bayswater group, the students generated six proposals that detailed ways the city could leverage the upgraded train station to enhance its culture and economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome proposals included giving the existing buildings a face-lift and increasing their street appeal so that anyone at the Bayswater train station would see a more modern city and might be attracted to walk into the area,\u201d says Pearce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers tried to symbolically link the station and the city through the use of art, with the idea being the city could become an exhibition for people to visit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;However, most proposals were based on a change that started with the health of the community: that people would attract people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Curtin Professor Reena Tiwari, the students\u2019 project leader, says the collaboration gave the budding architects the opportunity to put their learning to the test.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese experiential or \u2018real-world\u2019 projects give students lifelong skills, such as adapting to and understanding a variety of situations and people, while learning acceptance and tolerance of different lifestyles,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project enabled me to work in a real-world situation and have the opportunity to speak to real stakeholders,\u201d says Pearce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting out of the classroom brought whole new challenges, but I felt like what I was working on was actually going to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48345\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48345\" style=\"width: 792px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48345 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/FB-group.jpg\" alt=\"Members of Future Bayswater with Curtin Master of Architecture students. \" width=\"792\" height=\"420\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of Future Bayswater with Curtin Master of Architecture students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Githaiga, the project has given him new ambition.
