(Full Version)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A32Up3wBS6k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can make a difference to someone who\u2019s struggling by having regular, meaningful conversations about life up\u2019s and down\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>If you feel like something\u2019s up with someone you know \u2013 there\u2019s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they\u2019re saying or doing \u2013 trust your gut instinct and take the time to ask them \u2018Are you OK?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be an expert to have a caring, meaningful conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Follow R U OK\u2019s four conversation steps:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Ask R U OK?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pick the right time to start the conversation<\/li>\n<li>Mention specific things that have made you concerned for them, like \u201cYou seem less chatty than usual. How are you going?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Listen<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take what they have to say seriously and don\u2019t interrupt or rush the conversation.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage them to explain: \u201cHow are you feeling about that\u201d or \u201cHow long have you felt that way?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Show that you\u2019re listening by repeating back what you\u2019ve heard (in your own words) and ask if you understood them properly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Encourage Action<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Help them think of next steps they could take to help them manage their situation.<\/li>\n<li>If they\u2019ve been down for more than 2 weeks encourage them to see a health professional.<\/li>\n<li>Be positive about the role of professionals in getting through tough times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Check in<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Schedule a reminder to call them in a couple of weeks. If they\u2019re really struggling, check in with them sooner.<\/li>\n<li>Stay in touch and be there for them.
