We have a growing cohort of researchers who are engaged and interested in commercialisation opportunities. Our Commercialisation team supports these researchers and their collaborators through a range of mechanisms that enable and foster their ideas from conception to commercial success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commercialisation Pathway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we move from innovation to impact, commercialisation at Curtin follows the pathway depicted below. The Commercialisation team works closely with researchers to assess commercial potential, implement a commercialisation plan, and negotiate deals with commercial partners. It\u2019s worthwhile contacting the Commercialisation team early if you\u2019re working towards innovation that could be commercialised. Once you have some data or evidence supporting your innovation, consider disclosing it to Commercialisation for assessment.<\/p>\n<p>A disclosure of the innovation is the official starting point of our commercialisation process.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re at an earlier stage, the team are always willing to advise on matters such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Funding opportunities for ideas with commercial merit<\/li>\n<li>Requirements for confidentiality if you are looking to commercialise in the future<\/li>\n<li>How to approach industry to discuss opportunities around a potentially commercial idea<\/li>\n<li>The patenting process or other IP protection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Step-Two:-Assess\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Step-Two:-Assess\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Step-Two:-Assess\">Step Two: Assess<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Step-Two:-Assess\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The Commercialisation team work closely with researchers to perform a broad assessment of the potential for commercialisation. The key factors we look at are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The problem that the innovation solves<\/li>\n<li>Comparison with competing solutions<\/li>\n<li>The size of the market<\/li>\n<li>The stage of development<\/li>\n<li>The potential for protectable intellectual property, including patents and copyright<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most important aspect to ensure commercial success is to get feedback from industry or customers that the innovation can solve a real-world problem<\/p>\n<p>If the innovation is assessed as having commercial potential, a commercialisation plan will be developed.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Step-Three:-Implement-\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Step-Three:-Implement-\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Step-Three:-Implement-\">Step Three: Implement <\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Step-Three:-Implement-\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>A commercialisation plan will be developed, which will cover the following broad points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Commercial pathway, which could be licensing or formation of a spinout company<\/li>\n<li>IP protection strategy<\/li>\n<li>Potential partners or investors<\/li>\n<li>Technical development required to support commercialisation<\/li>\n<li>Funding and time required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ideally, the commercialisation plan is driven by feedback from industry or investors and is subject to ongoing review as new information and results emerge.<\/p>\n<p>This phase often involves technical development to prepare the technology to a stage where it is of interest to investors or licensees. There are many funding sources available to researchers at Curtin who are working towards commercialisation outcomes, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Direct industry funding<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aea.gov.au\/researcher-applicant\/grants\">Australia\u2019s Economic Accelerator (AEA) Ignite and Innovate grants<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Various grant schemes (both at the state and Commonwealth level), which are often targeted at a specific technology area<\/li>\n<li>Curtin\u2019s internal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/engage\/entrepreneurs\/kickstart-funding\/\">Kickstart<\/a> fund, administered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/research\/work-with-us\/commercialisation-draft\/#cab\">Curtin Commercialisation Advisory Board (CAB)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Commercialisation team can assist with many of the commercially focused grant applications, and will assist with negotiation of IP terms to protect the university\u2019s commercial position.<\/p>\n<p>The Kickstart fund can commit funding up to $500,000 per project, upon presentation of a business case to the CAB. Any application must be made in consultation with the Commercialisation team and be consistent with the commercialisation plan. Further information on Kickstart is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/engage\/entrepreneurs\/kickstart-funding\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Step-Four:-Deal\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Step-Four:-Deal\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Step-Four:-Deal\">Step Four: Deal<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Step-Four:-Deal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>To bring a product to market, we usually need to get the innovation out of the university and in the hands of a commercially driven organisation. In most cases, this is either by licensing IP to an existing company, or through the formation of a new spinout company.<\/p>\n<p><u>Licensing<\/u><\/p>\n<p>If we can identify an existing company who operates in the same market as our technology, then we may be able to license the technology. A license agreement grants rights to the company to manufacture, use or sell our innovation in return for payments, often as a royalty calculated as a percentage of revenue.<\/p>\n<p>The advantage of licensing is that we are dealing with an existing company with internal processes, sales networks and knowledge of the market. Under the IP Policy, inventors receive a 50% share of the revenue received from the company.<\/p>\n<p><u>Spinout<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Curtin may form a spinout company in situations when we cannot identify an existing company to take a licence, or where the technology shows considerable promise to investors. Upon formation of a company, the inventors and Curtin both become shareholders; further equity is then granted to external investors.<\/p>\n<p>A spinout company offers researchers the chance to get involved in a growing technology company as shareholders and employees. While the returns are often larger than if we license technology, there is often no revenue until an exit event, such as when the company is sold to a larger acquirer or listed on a stock exchange.<\/p>\n<p>The Commercialisation team has experience dealing with all types of commercial deals, and has template agreements to assist with the process.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Step-Five:-Product-in-Market\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Step-Five:-Product-in-Market\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Step-Five:-Product-in-Market\">Step Five: Product in Market<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Step-Five:-Product-in-Market\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Once the technology is being developed by an external company, Curtin may engage to undertake further research and development. Often the product or service will not yet be ready for market, and further research and development will be funded at Curtin.<\/p>\n<p>Different technology areas may come to market over vastly different timescales. Once a product has been launched, we track its growth closely so that we can measure and report on its societal impact. This provides useful case studies to demonstrate to government, industry and other stakeholders that the research performed at Curtin delivers value, through new products and services as well as economic activity.<\/p>\n<p>We use the following metrics to record and highlight the impact of commercialisation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Products sold<\/li>\n<li>Revenue<\/li>\n<li>Investment capital raised<\/li>\n<li>Number of employees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this stage. the research team may also look to develop next-generation products so that the competitive advantage can be maintained.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n        \n<\/mimas-block>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curtinnovation Readiness Levels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Curtinnovation Readiness Levels map the progress of technologies from discovery through to market implementation and scale. This simple five-step scheme considers the advancement of our projects as they achieve commercial and technical validation, result in commercial deals, impact the market as new products and services, and eventually reach customers on a national or global scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image143852_3e8211-c5 size-medium_large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Simplified-CRL-768x399.jpg\" alt=\"Infographic displaying the five Curtinnovation Readiness Levels. \" class=\"kb-img wp-image-143853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Simplified-CRL-768x399.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Simplified-CRL-1536x798.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Simplified-CRL.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IP Policy and Procedures and Ownership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s30991.pcdn.co\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/03\/Intellectual_Property_Policy.pdf\">Curtin\u2019s Intellectual Property Policy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/s30991.pcdn.co\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/04\/Intellectual_Property_Procedures.pdf\">Intellectual Property Procedures<\/a> govern the ownership, use and commercialisation of Intellectual Property (IP) produced by staff members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staff are encouraged to actively engage in commercialisation activities and are rewarded through a generous revenue sharing scheme whereby 50% of commercial revenue (after costs) is shared with the inventors or originators of the technology or innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Staff<\/strong>: IP created by staff during their duties or on Curtin projects is typically owned by Curtin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students<\/strong>: Students own the IP they create, unless otherwise agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exemptions: Curtin acknowledges individual ownership of scholarly and artistic works. Indigenous cultural and intellectual property is managed in consultation with relevant communities.<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"cards-image\"\n        data-segment=\"dom\">\n\n
