Project aims to address the higher risk of stillbirth among Aboriginal populations in Australia. Through a collaborative and holistic approach, the project seeks to understand the causes, beliefs, and barriers related to stillbirth, and develop culturally sensitive intervention strategies. The project’s significance lies in its potential to prevent stillbirths through health promotion, improved healthcare, and community engagement, with broader applicability beyond its primary focus in the southwest of Western Australia.

The core vision of the Jinda Maawit Project is to employ co-design processes, involving collaboration between various stakeholders, to build an evidence-based foundation for preventative population health strategies aimed at reducing stillbirth rates within Aboriginal communities. The project responds to the calls made by an extensive network of Elders and community stakeholders and aligns with the priorities outlined in the 2020 National Stillbirth Action and Implementation Plan.

This initiative is guided by three interconnected aims:

Advancing Knowledge: The project seeks to enhance our understanding of population-level risks and causal pathways related to Aboriginal stillbirth. It accomplishes this through a series of epidemiological studies that draw from comprehensive data sources, including social, environmental, behavioral, and innovative clinical perinatal death reviews.

Understanding Beliefs and Barriers: By developing a foundational understanding of the knowledge, perceptions, and beliefs surrounding stillbirth risks within Aboriginal families, communities, and care providers, the project aims to identify barriers to timely, high-quality antenatal care and the uptake of post-mortem examinations.

Investigating Intervention Strategies: Jinda Maawit explores culturally specific intervention strategies to bolster stillbirth education and awareness among Aboriginal communities.

Community-driven remodelling of bereavement care services for Aboriginal perinatal loss

The loss of a baby in the perinatal period is a tragic event for parents, families and communities, and has a profound and enduring impact on the psychosocial wellbeing of parents; with these losses disproportionately affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (hereafter Aboriginal) communities (2-3 times higher rates). Despite the recognised and widespread benefits of timely and appropriate bereavement care for the holistic (immediate and long-term) wellbeing of grieving families, there remains an appalling and drastic shortage of culturally safe bereavement care services for Aboriginal peoples, nationally.

The overall vision of this project is to use co-design processes to develop a foundation of evidence to design, implement and evaluate the first comprehensive, culturally secure model of bereavement care services for Aboriginal families. The project is Aboriginal-led and governed, and directly addresses the concerns of our network of Elders and community and project partners, responds to key research priorities established in the 2020 National Stillbirth Action and Implementation Plan and National Stillbirth Research Priorities Report, and is strongly supported by the preliminary findings of our current funded studies on Aboriginal stillbirth knowledge.

Our team will conduct the first action research study of bereavement care and adopt a multi-dimensional, mixed methods approach to address and evaluate four inter-connected aims:

(1) Develop a foundational understanding of the experiences, perceptions and needs of Aboriginal families in perinatal bereavement care.
(2) Investigate the experiences and needs of care providers in providing optimal care.
(3) Co-design, implement and refine an Aboriginal-specific model of bereavement care
(4) Disseminate research findings and advocate for system-wide transformation of perinatal bereavement care services.

This evidence will generate critical new knowledge, strategies and resources that will provide a platform for transforming bereavement care systems and practice that can benefit the resilience, emotional wellbeing and coping skills of Aboriginal peoples suffering a perinatal loss. While the work will primarily engage with, and focus on, health services on Noongar Boodja (south-west of Western Australia), the outcomes have potential application to other regions.

Breaking down the impact of structural racism on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander adolescent mental health

This project will use co-design processes to build foundational evidence on the impact of structural racism in education and health settings on Aboriginal adolescents’ mental health. Strong Aboriginal governance is fundamental to the project design, and will ensure that Aboriginal Elders, communities and service providers are partners in all research activities, providing overarching guidance—from inception to completion.

These processes will guide a mixed methods study focused on how structural racism manifests for Aboriginal adolescents in education and health settings and its critical impact on their mental health. Belinda hopes her research can help improve the vitamin D status of the Australian population.

Summary:

Vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration < 50nmol/L) is prevalent among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, affecting 27% of adults ≥ 18 years and 39% of those living in remote areas. Vitamin D is primarily obtained via UV-B radiation from the sun, but can also be obtained from food (e.g., fish, eggs, and meat) and supplements. However, vitamin D intake among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is unknown. Vitamin D deficiency may result in adverse health outcomes beyond musculoskeletal health, such as metabolic syndrome and poor mental health, which are health conditions prevalent among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and those health outcomes has not yet been investigated among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples using nationally representative data.

Belinda’s PhD project addresses these research gaps, providing new insights into vitamin D among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia.

Her research objectives are:

Quantify vitamin D intake among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Model vitamin D food fortification scenarios among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Investigate associations between serum 25(OH)D concentration and metabolic health and its individual risk factors among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Investigate association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and mental health among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

</mimas-block>

Student Engagement

<mimas-block
        block-name="accordion"
        role="complementary"
        aria-label="Accordion content"
        data-segment="all">

Sadra Sarandili

Medical student with a passion for technology, design, and research.

Abhilash Dhruva

Kaya! Because both parents worked Muriel helped her mother at home to help raise her siblings but also attended the local York State Primary School then started working as a domestic for many years as she had no access to a High School. In her late teens Muriel was the first Aboriginal employee at the new York hospital which was pretty ironic as she wasn’t allowed to be born in the old York hospital. Muriel was also very active in the local sporting scene playing competitive hockey, basketball, netball and football (all women’s team!!).

In the early 1960’s Muriel moved to Perth with her family where she found work and met her husband Lyall Bowie who was here from Badu Island, Torres Straits. Muriel had three children & went back to Midland TAFE to further her own education so she could help her own children through school. She then went on to work at the Anawim Aboriginal Women’s Refuge for the next 20yrs as a trained qualified counsellor to support the many women who sought help with homelessness, accommodation, domestic violence, childcare, and the many issues they faced in returning to the community. She was also a foundation member of Yorgum.

Muriel is a well respected Ballardong Elder and is still active in the community on a number of Aboriginal committees and is an active member of People Who Care. She is passionate about making change for a better future for the children, families and Noongar community.

churchill
Churchill Fellowship 2025

Congratulations to Dr Bernardo Dewey and Carolyn Lewis from the Indigenous Health Research Program at Curtin Medical School, who have both been awarded 2025 Churchill Fellowships.
