It is important that we are aware of any carers who are supporting students on campus so that we can make necessary arrangements with teaching staff, and ensure that carers are aware of important Curtin procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a disability and are not already registered with AccessAbility Services, please make sure you contact us to discuss additional assistance and support<\/a> that may be available to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To bring a paid or unpaid carer to campus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

  1. \n

    Contact AccessAbility Services<\/h3>\n
    \n

    The External Support Worker must contact AccessAbility Services<\/a> as soon as they are aware that they will be supporting a student on a Curtin campus, or in on-line classes.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Complete a Curtin Campus Induction<\/h3>\n
    \n

    All External Support Workers (including carers and family members) must complete the Campus Induction<\/a> and provide a signed copy to the relevant AccessAbility Advisor prior to supporting students on campus.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/li>\n

    Understand limits of insurance coverage<\/h3>\n
    \n

    It is important to be aware that Curtin can\u2019t provide insurance coverage for any External Support Worker or carer unless they\u2019re employed directly by the University. In the instance where a carer is provided by an external body, the external organisation should indemnify and provide insurance coverage for their carers.<\/p>\n

    However, this wouldn\u2019t apply if a relative or friend is acting in a voluntary capacity and offering their services free of charge. In these circumstances, it is important that both the student and their carer understand any exposures that may exist, in respect of their liability and\/or injuries\/illnesses sustained while performing these caring duties.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Meet with AccessAbility Services<\/h3>\n
    \n

    An AccessAbility Advisor will need to meet with the External Support Worker to ensure that necessary induction, boundaries and guidelines are understood. Where possible the student should be involved in this meeting.<\/p>\n

    A student who will be accompanied by an External Support Worker on campus will need to register with AccessAbility Services prior to the commencement of semester, preferably several weeks before semester commences.<\/p>\n

    If an External Support Worker is attending classes in person or on-line, AccessAbility Services will need to liaise with Unit Coordinators to give consideration to matters such as venue capacity, safety equipment, any training requirements, access to certain restricted areas of campus, on-line participation and other special approval that they may require.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/li>\n <\/ol>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n
