class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is gender-based violence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gender-based violence is any form of physical or non-physical violence, harassment, abuse or threats, based on gender, that results in, or is likely to result in, harm, coercion, control, fear or deprivation of liberty or autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if I am accused of gender-based violence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should get support and advice as soon as possible\u2014there\u2019s more information about how to get support and advice below.<\/p>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n University will complete a risk assessment<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"The-University-will-complete-a-risk-assessment\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>We will do a risk assessment that considers the health and safety of the University community. \u00a0This may mean that we take steps to minimise risks, which could include temporarily:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Changing the location or time of your classes.<\/li>\n<li>Directing you not to contact certain people.<\/li>\n<li>Moving you into different accommodation (if you live on campus).<\/li>\n<li>Excluding you from campus.<\/li>\n<li>Directing you to do online classes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The risk assessment and any steps we take are not a disciplinary process and do not mean any decision has been made against you about the allegation.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-You-may-be-subject-to-a-disciplinary-process\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"You-may-be-subject-to-a-disciplinary-process\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-You-may-be-subject-to-a-disciplinary-process\">You may be subject to a disciplinary process<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"You-may-be-subject-to-a-disciplinary-process\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>As a student, you may be subject to the University\u2019s disciplinary process under <em>Statute No 10 \u2013 Student Discipline<\/em> and the <em>General Misconduct Rules 2017<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, we will follow these steps, but you should read the <em>General Misconduct Rules 2017 <\/em>for specific details:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We appoint someone to consider the matter.<\/li>\n<li>If an investigation is started, you will be given the allegation and any other relevant information.<\/li>\n<li>You may be asked to make a statement or to provide more information.<\/li>\n<li>You will be given an opportunity to formally respond to the allegation, and to provide your own response.<\/li>\n<li>The investigator will prepare a report and will give it to a Student Discipline Panel.<\/li>\n<li>The Student Discipline Panel will decide whether you engaged in misconduct and apply penalties under the <em>General Misconduct Rules 2017<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>You will have the opportunity to appeal the Student Discipline Panel\u2019s decision.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-You-may-be-subject-to-criminal-or-civil-proceedings\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"You-may-be-subject-to-criminal-or-civil-proceedings\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-You-may-be-subject-to-criminal-or-civil-proceedings\">You may be subject to criminal or civil proceedings<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"You-may-be-subject-to-criminal-or-civil-proceedings\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Nothing about the University\u2019s disciplinary process stops someone from taking other legal action against you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If other proceedings are started, any statement or response you give as part of a disciplinary process could be used against you and may be sought by external authorities like the police.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n        \n<\/mimas-block>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should I do?<\/h2>\n\n\n<section\n                class=\"block numbered-list \"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n    <ol class=\"numbered-list__items\">\n                    <li class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n                                    <h3>Get support<\/h3>\n                                                    <div class=\"numbered-list__content content last-mb0\">\n                        <p>Consider getting support from:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/personal-support\/counselling-wellbeing\/wellbeing\/\">Student Wellbeing Advisory Service<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/personal-support\/counselling-wellbeing\/counselling\/\">Curtin Psychological and Counselling Services<\/a> or an external counselling service<\/li>\n<li>Someone who you trust to be your support person<\/li>\n<li>The Curtin Student Guild \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/guild.curtin.edu.au\/advice\/\">Student Assist team<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n                    <\/div>\n                            <\/li>\n                    <li class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n                                    <h3>Get advice<\/h3>\n                                                    <div class=\"numbered-list__content content last-mb0\">\n                        <p>You have the right to get legal advice from a lawyer.\u00a0 You should consider getting legal advice that is specific to your situation.<\/p>\n\n                    <\/div>\n                            <\/li>\n                    <li class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n                                    <h3>Consider your options<\/h3>\n                                                    <div class=\"numbered-list__content content last-mb0\">\n                        <p>You should keep copies of any records that might be relevant to the investigation (texts, snaps, whatever).\u00a0 You can give the investigator the names of any witnesses that you think might have relevant information.<\/p>\n<p>You can bring a support person to any meeting.<\/p>\n\n                    <\/div>\n                            <\/li>\n                    <li class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n                                    <h3>Don\u2019t contact the discloser<\/h3>\n                                                    <div class=\"numbered-list__content content last-mb0\">\n                        <p>Don\u2019t contact the person who made the allegation against you, whether in person, by text or online.\u00a0 If you do, you might be faced with additional consequences for retaliating or victimising, even if you didn\u2019t mean to do that.<\/p>\n\n                    <\/div>\n                            <\/li>\n                    <li class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n                                    <h3>Keep things confidential<\/h3>\n                                                    <div class=\"numbered-list__content content last-mb0\">\n                        <p>Don\u2019t talk or post about the matter online or with anyone who isn\u2019t involved, but you <u>can<\/u> talk to your
