You may be tempted to use help from generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) software, a friend, a family member, or an online company offering writing or tutoring services, but this may put you at risk for contract cheating and potential blackmail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>What is contract cheating?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Contract cheating (also known as assessment outsourcing or ghost writing) can be defined as submitting written or creative work which has been drafted or produced by another &#8211; including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/academic-integrity\/gen-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GenAI software<\/a>, friends, family, or a paid contracting service, and claiming authorship for it. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Allowing someone or an organisation to draft or complete an assessment task on your behalf<\/li>\n<li>Contracting another person to do the work for you<\/li>\n<li>Purchasing work from another source<\/li>\n<li>Allowing or contracting another person to edit and substantially change your work<\/li>\n<li>Providing your Curtin credentials to another person so that they can take a test or exam for you<\/li>\n<li>Unapproved, inappropriate, or undisclosed use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/academic-integrity\/gen-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GenAI software<\/a> within an assessment task.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<mimas-block \n        block-name=\"accordion\"\n        role=\"complementary\"\n        aria-label=\"Accordion content\"\n        data-segment=\"all\">\n\n                \n\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Where-can-I-learn-more-about-contract-cheating?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Where-can-I-learn-more-about-contract-cheating?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Where-can-I-learn-more-about-contract-cheating?\">Where can I learn more about contract cheating?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Where-can-I-learn-more-about-contract-cheating?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>The following programs are available at Curtin:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/academic-integrity\/aip\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Integrity Program (AIP)<\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0compulsory educational program that provides information about contract cheating.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/academic-integrity\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Academic Integrity Website<\/a>\u00a0has comics and other resources that discuss contract cheating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Is-using-GenAI-software-considered-contract-cheating?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Is-using-GenAI-software-considered-contract-cheating?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Is-using-GenAI-software-considered-contract-cheating?\">Is using GenAI software considered contract cheating?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Is-using-GenAI-software-considered-contract-cheating?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Inappropriate use of GenAI software may be considered assessment outsourcing. To avoid this, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/essentials\/rights\/academic-integrity\/gen-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">learn about appropriate use of GenAI technologies.<\/a><\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-How-do-I-know-if-I-am-looking-at-a-contract-cheating-website?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"How-do-I-know-if-I-am-looking-at-a-contract-cheating-website?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-How-do-I-know-if-I-am-looking-at-a-contract-cheating-website?\">How do I know if I am looking at a contract cheating website?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"How-do-I-know-if-I-am-looking-at-a-contract-cheating-website?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Some legitimate university websites (like those ending in &#8216;edu.au&#8217;) are being hacked by contract cheating organisations. They insert malicious code into the university website that redirects students to the illegal cheating website. <span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">Australia&#8217;s higher education regulation<\/span><\/span> agency TEQSA has provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teqsa.gov.au\/advice-students-always-check-link-you-click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advice to students<\/a>\u00a0to help (reproduced with permission):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Check the URL of any page you click on and ensure it is the correct website.<\/li>\n<li>When searching for academic support, use the search function within your institution&#8217;s website. Do not use a search engine.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use any website that asks for payment from you in order to access &#8216;study support&#8217; or which offers essay or assignment writing services.<\/li>\n<li>Be wary when clicking links to any third-party website left in comments on a website or on social media pages.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm that essay or other competitions are legitimate. Illegal cheating services sometimes hold fake contests in a bid to get student work to on-sell.<\/li>\n<li>Never share your work online. This includes via social media or websites that ask for a sample of your work in return for &#8216;free&#8217; support.<\/li>\n<li>Report any suspect website link on your institution&#8217;s website to your institution&#8217;s website team.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure you understand academic integrity. TEQSA&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teqsa.gov.au\/understanding-academic-integrity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resources for students<\/a>\u00a0are a great place to start.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyber.gov.au\/protect-yourself\/resources-protect-yourself\/protecting-your-family?ref=search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian Cyber Security Centre<\/a>\u00a0has more general information for individuals about staying safe online.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Guy Curtis (2020) has created a list to help students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell-tale signs that you are looking at an illegal cheating site:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Asking for payment to complete assignment work for you.<\/li>\n<li>Assurances that they offer good quality writers\/writing.<\/li>\n<li>An Order button.<\/li>\n<li>Prices linked to assignment length and completion times.<\/li>\n<li>Attempts to justify why buying assignments might be okay.<\/li>\n<li>Testimonials from customers, often accompanied by stock photos of people who aren&#8217;t real students.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Guarantees of plagiarism-free work.<\/li>\n<li>The need to create a personal account and login.<\/li>\n<li>One of a number of nearly identical sites with different domain names.<\/li>\n<li>Terms of service that disclaim responsibility if students are caught submitting work from the site.<\/li>\n<li>Various service guarantees such as 24\/7 support, live chat, feedback, money-back if unsatisfied (research shows they don&#8217;t always deliver on these*).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><sub>Ellis, C., Zucker, I. If you contract cheat you will not gain these fundamental skills and this may put you in a situation where you lack the skill-set required to succeed in your chosen profession.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loss of credentials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Curtin&#8217;s ability to detect contract cheating is continuously improving through technological advancement and staff training. This means that even after graduation, the risks associated with contract cheating continue. Your degree may be rescinded if we find you engaged in contract cheating during your studies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risk of extortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Curtin is also aware that some students have been blackmailed by the people and organisations who completed the work the student submitted\u00a0(see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3wi_Ui4aJrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video example<\/a>). Sometimes the contracted organisation or person will threaten to tell Curtin about the cheating if the student does not pay. This blackmail could be one-off or ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>If you or someone that you know are in this situation, it is important that you contact the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/students\/personal-support\/counselling-wellbeing\/wellbeing\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Wellbeing Advisory Service<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guild.curtin.edu.au\/studentassist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Assist<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:aip@curtin.edu.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AIP@curtin.edu.au<\/a>\u00a0at Curtin for help.<\/p>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Is-it-contract-cheating-to-work-with-a-tutor-or-editor?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Is-it-contract-cheating-to-work-with-a-tutor-or-editor?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Is-it-contract-cheating-to-work-with-a-tutor-or-editor?\">Is it contract cheating to work with a tutor or editor?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Is-it-contract-cheating-to-work-with-a-tutor-or-editor?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>Tutors can be helpful in some instances, however you are responsible for setting the boundaries for appropriate assistance. If at any point the tutor begins to substantially edit or complete parts or your assessment then this becomes contract cheating.<\/p>\n<p>If you are considering hiring an editor or asking someone to proofread or edit your work, make sure to clearly outline your expectations for the scope of the edit. You can refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2021\/11\/Guideline-for-Professional-Thesis-Editing-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guideline for Professional Thesis Editing [.pdf 40kB]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The person should only highlight or indicate where there are problems rather than changing the text for you. If you provide them with an electronic copy of your document it is preferable for them to use commenting tools rather than to change the work.<\/p>\n<p>Professional editors, as part of their usual role in document production, often make changes within the document. However, as a student submitting your work for assessment, accepting the changes of an editor may be seen as contract cheating or plagiarism as you are claiming the work of someone else as your own.<\/p>\n<p>The elements of a document that an editor may be able to check for you are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Typographical and spelling errors<\/li>\n<li>Errors in word usage<\/li>\n<li>Errors in grammar and syntax<\/li>\n<li>Errors and inconsistencies in punctuation<\/li>\n<li>Consistent use of formatting, capitalisation, abbreviations, or systems of measurement<br \/>\n(metric versus imperial)<\/li>\n<li>Consistent and accurate application of academic writing conventions such as captions for tables\/figures, formatting of in-text citations and referencing<\/li>\n<li>Connections and transitions between paragraphs and sections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When reviewing the editor&#8217;s comments you can implement corrections for spelling, punctuation, formatting and style but should carefully consider recommendations that could substantially alter the meaning, the flow, or the originality of your document. As much as possible consider recommended sentence or paragraph changes and put them into your own words.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan to use an editor for your thesis it is recommended that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss your desire to use an editor with your supervisor before approaching an editor<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the scope of the edit with your supervisor and ensure that the editor understands and agrees to apply this when reviewing your document<\/li>\n<li>Indicate within the appropriate section of your theses that an editor was used and include a description of the scope of the edit.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtin.edu.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2021\/11\/Guideline-for-Professional-Thesis-Editing-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines for the editing of research theses by professional editors [.pdf 40kB]<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n        \n                            \n                    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n                    <div class=\"accordion\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-title-Can-I-get-help-from-websites-such-as-Chegg.com?\">\n            <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion__heading\" aria-controls=\"Can-I-get-help-from-websites-such-as-Chegg.com?\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n            <div class=\"title\" id=\"accordion-title-Can-I-get-help-from-websites-such-as-Chegg.com?\">Can I get help from websites such as Chegg.com?<\/div>\n            <div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\" id=\"Can-I-get-help-from-websites-such-as-Chegg.com?\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                    <p>No. The use of file sharing and assignment help websites such as Chegg.com are not condoned for use at Curtin. This means that you will not receive credit for the unit.
