Origami inspired furniture won 麻豆直播 of Technology student Yoshio Takagi two awards at the Melbourne Fringe Festival recently.
Mr Takagi, of Bassendean, won the Fringe Furniture 2008 people鈥檚 choice award and best design award for his design titled, Molentje.
鈥淲inning these awards was fantastic and unexpected, but it certainly opened my eyes to what I could achieve. I really appreciated the feedback I received from other well-known designers in the industry,鈥� he said.
鈥淢y goal for the project was to design a table that was completely unique, but yet showed strong emotion through shapes and colours.
鈥淚 chose to include fabric from traditional wedding kimonos in my design. The prominent colours of red and white embodied the rising sun of the Japanese flag, and the two embroidered cranes signified two souls uniting to a greater purpose, which was often the leading theme for Japanese weddings customs.
鈥淭he theme of the table reflects these ideas and my Japanese identity.鈥�
He said Fringe Furniture 2008 had given him the opportunity to showcase his work to a variety of people including representatives of the product and furniture design industry.
Mr Takagi is a second year student undertaking a Bachelor of Arts (Design) Product and Furniture Design Major at Curtin鈥檚 School of Design and Art (SODA).
SODA Furniture Design Coordinator, Mark Lawson, congratulated Mr Takagi on his win.
鈥淵oshi is a very talented young furniture designer with a great future ahead of him,鈥� he said.
