Ā鶹ֱ²„ of Technology has joined an elite group of research universities by being ranked in the top 500 by a global listing published annually by Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003.
The listing is widely recognised as the leading league table for universities.
Curtin Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jeanette Hacket, said she was pleased Curtinās research efforts had been recognised in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Universityās 2009 rankings of world universities.
āWeāre enormously proud of this ranking which confirms our status as a serious research university in Asia,ā she said.
Ā āIn fact, by achieving a ranking in the top 500 we have become the first university in the five-member Australian Technology Network to achieve such a result.ā
Professor Hacket believed Curtinās world ranking would continue to improve, particularly in the Universityās key research focus areas of resources and energy, ICT, health, and sustainable development.
āWith the official opening of our new $116 million Resources and Chemistry Precinct this month, I am confident our outstanding research activity in this area will continue to experience strong growth,ā she said.
āThe Precinct alone will house more than 200 minerals, energy and chemistry researchers and be one of the most concentrated clusters of this type of research in the Southern Hemisphere.ā
Earlier in the year the University also launched the Australian Sustainable Development Institute which brings together researchers from 16 research areas to intensify and integrate Curtinās research and teaching activities in sustainable development.
