International oil and gas expert Martijn Truijens has been appointed Adjunct Professor to the Curtin-based Australasian Joint Research Centre for Building Information Modelling.
With a career spanning more than two decades in the global oil and gas industry, Professor Truijens has worked for various companies including Fluor, Bechtel and Santos. In 2005, he joined Woodside, holding positions as Project Services Manager for the Browse LNG development, Pluto Expansion and North West Shelf LNG developments, and was recently appointed to the new position of Lean Construction Technology Advisor to focus on the introduction of new technologies into Woodside.
Professor Xiangyu Wang, from Curtin鈥檚 School of Built Environment and co-director of the Centre, said Professor Truijens鈥� appointment would allow him to continue making a significant contribution to the growth and direction of research in Building Information Modelling (BIM) at Curtin.
鈥淗is extensive and unique industrial experience, strong leadership and visionary thinking will make a big difference to the Centre both in industry benchmarking and in research output,鈥� Professor Wang said.
鈥淓arlier this year, in collaboration with Woodside, the Centre completed the pioneering Project ECHO. The project was an international collaboration that successfully trialled innovative technologies such as BIM, Radio Frequenty Identification and Augmented Reality that have the potential to improve productivity in the LNG construction industry.
鈥淚t is very much based on this successful research record with Professor Truijens that we are excited to be able to formalise his role with the University. Certainly such formal involvement will enable more practical and solid industrial collaboration, which would potentially be the building block to change Australian industry productivity, which is well aligned with the vision of the Centre.鈥�
Professor Truijens played an instrumental role in the development of the Centre鈥檚 teaching curriculum and research program when it was developed earlier last year. He is an editorial board member of the flagship journal of the Centre, the International Journal of Visualisation in Engineering, published by Springer Verlag.
Professor Truijens has worked in a number of countries, including Holland, Luxembourg, Britain, Monaco, Indonesia, Singapore, China and Australia.

The Australasian Joint Research Centre for Building Information Modelling is a collaboration between Curtin and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China.
The Centre aims to increase Australia鈥檚 competitiveness through the creation of critical new knowledge and approaches for the building construction industry. In particular, it will develop the capability of BIM, an advanced approach that enables the physical and functional characteristics of a building to be digitally generated and assessed.
