麻豆直播鈥檚 School of Nursing and Midwifery is looking for volunteer patients to contribute in a valuable and unique way to the education and training of future nurses.
Volunteers can be people of all ages and backgrounds. The role of聽 the volunteer patient ranges from helping assess student skills in taking temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure to more complex situations where trained volunteers play the role of a patient with a medical or surgical condition in a ward.
Harry Caine, from East Cannington, who has been volunteering on the program for more than five years said he loves volunteering and got involved because he wanted to give something back to the community.
鈥淚 know that I am helping nursing students to practise their skills, and who knows, one day I might unexpectedly need the help of a nurse. This is my way of giving back,鈥 Mr Caine said.
Ms Michelle Bowman, of Curtin鈥檚 School of Nursing and Midwifery, said that the program wouldn鈥檛 exist without the volunteers.
鈥淥ur volunteers鈥 contribution is critical and immensely valued by our staff and students,鈥 Ms Bowman said.
鈥淵ou need to be a team player, but really anyone can volunteer for this program. If you have some spare time and want to make a difference to a future nurse鈥檚 career, this is a great opportunity.
Sessions are held at Curtin鈥檚 School of Nursing and Midwifery at the main Bentley Campus. Volunteers provide a few hours of their time in the months of May, June, August, September, October or November. No prior experience is necessary.
All volunteers are provided with free parking on campus, refreshments, and are given movie vouchers as a token of appreciation after participating in a training session.
Every volunteer鈥檚 involvement will help to provide realistic learning opportunities where nursing students can gain confidence and competence in a safe environment.
