What is MS Teams?
Microsoft Teams (MS Teams) is a collaboration platform within the Microsoft 365 suite designed to facilitate communication and teamwork.
Five Key Points for using MS Teams as a Student:
Microsoft Teams (MS Teams) is a collaboration platform that allows you to chat, meet, call and collaborate in one place. It is particularly useful for you when working on group assignments or other activities that need effective communication. As a Curtin student you will be mostly using MS Teams to:
Communicate: Chat with classmates and lecturers one-on-one or in groups.
Collaborate: Work together on projects in real-time using shared documents, files and whiteboards.
Organise: Stay on top of your assignments with calendars, to-do lists, and channel organisation.
Learn and have fun: Connect with classmates in virtual study groups, make and receive calls, or have online meetings with your classmates for study sessions or social interaction.
Not all teaching staff will use MS Teams. Some courses/units will use the tool for group discussions and file collaboration, but not all. Your teaching team will tell you how and when you should communicate with them. This may or may not include MS Teams.
MS Teams doesn’t replace formal communication channels. For assessment or exam extensions, follow the formal process as usual.
Avoid using MS Teams to contact staff outside of their preferred hours as advised and allow 48 hours for a response. For urgent matters, contact your unit coordinator listed in your unit outline or the
Treat MS Teams like email for class-related communication. Use it for questions that can’t wait until the next class, such as assignment or course material clarifications.
Maintain professionalism on MS Teams. Although it feels like a casual social media channel, keep communication formal and respectful. If you wouldn’t say or show it in class, don’t post it on MS Teams.
