As part of Curtin’s ongoing commitment to strengthening cyber security and protecting our systems, data and personal information, multi-factor authentication (MFA) is being applied across some essential student applications.
What is multi-factor authentication (MFA)?
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) provides an extra layer of security that helps protect your account by requiring two forms of verification when logging in. This typically includes something you know (your password) and something you have (such as a mobile device for authentication). MFA is widely used in many services like banking, email, and social media accounts.
Lost your device registered with MFA?
If you have lost access to your phone or authentication method, you can follow the instructions in to register your new device to MFA and remove any old, registered MFA devices.

Frequently asked questions
Find the answers to common MFA enquiries below:
MFA is being implemented to student Microsoft accounts to enhance security and protect student accounts from unauthorised access. Cyber threats are increasing, and MFA helps prevent phishing attacks and other malicious activities that could compromise your personal and academic information.
Once you’ve set up MFA, you’ll log in using your Curtin student ID and password as usual. After that, you’ll receive a prompt to verify your identity via an authentication method, such as a smartphone app. Once you respond to the prompt, you’ll gain access to your account.
MFA prompts won’t appear every time you log in. You will be prompted for MFA when logging in from a new or untrusted device. If you use a personal device and choose to stay signed in, you may only need to authenticate after a set period, such as every 90 days.
If you do not set up MFA, you may be unable to access Microsoft applications until you complete the setup process. It is recommended to set it up as soon as possible to avoid any disruption.
Yes, while Microsoft Authenticator is the recommended option, you can use other authentication apps like Google Authenticator or Cisco Duo. Microsoft Authenticator provides the best compatibility with Microsoft products.
No, MFA is mandatory for all students to ensure the security of Curtin accounts and data. Opting out is not an option.
If you lose access to your phone or authentication method, you can follow the instructions in to register your new device to MFA and remove any old, registered MFA devices.
Using an authenticator app is the most reliable method for MFA. If you do not have access to a compatible smartphone but have your own laptop, pleaseon your browser.
If you do not have your own laptop, please submit a or call the IT Help Desk on +61 8 9266 9000.
If you are signing in from a trusted device, you may not be prompted for MFA. If you are prompted for authentication, please visit the Library IT Help Desk – Building 105, Level 2 or call the IT Help Desk on +61 8 9266 9000.
If you have both student and staff accounts, they are managed separately with their own login credentials and MFA settings. You will need to register both accounts separately into your authenticator app, making sure to use the same authenticator app for both accounts. Always use the correct account based on whether you’re accessing staff systems or student resources.
