Loss is a normal part of the human experience, though losing someone or something important to you can lead to a painful and confusing time.

Here you will find key information about grief and loss, Curtin’s support services, and where to find additional support and resources.

What are grief and loss?

Grief is aÌýcommon andÌýnatural response to loss. ThereÌýareÌýnoÌýrules aboutÌýwhat a person can grieve about. ItÌýcanÌýbe the loss of a loved one, relationship, pregnancy, fertility,Ìýhealth,Ìýliving situation, pet,Ìýemployment,Ìýprecious possession,Ìýor way of life.ÌýÌý

When a person is grievingÌýaÌýloss, itÌýcanÌýaffect every part of lifeÌýincludingÌýemotions, thoughts, behaviours, physical health,Ìýsense of self, identity, spirituality, and relationships.ÌýComplex feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety, shock, regret, relief, irritation,Ìýnumbness or overwhelm areÌýnormal.Ìý

There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Everyone experiences grief differently. There is no set pattern or length of time you should grieve for. Grief swings on a pendulum between feeling the loss and trying to move forward. The time on each side of the pendulum can be minutes, hours, days, or months. Ìý

WhileÌýgrief is a unique experience,Ìýsharing yourÌýthoughts, feelings, and situation in aÌýcomfortable space can help youÌýwork through theÌýloss.ÌýÌý
